Fall Fun At SAC

With summer now setting on the horizon, Southampton Arts Center (SAC) is looking forward to fall and several events in September, including the opening of SAC’s newest exhibition “Clearing the Air: The Transformative Power of the Arts,” a show opening September 17 that is curated by Jay Davis, artist and curator of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Ambulatory Care Arts Program. Here’s what’s on deck.

Film: ESPN 1986 Mets Docuseries “30 for 30: Once Upon a Time in Queens” with Hamptons Doc Fest, Friday, September 10, at 6 p.m.

Heads up to baseball fans: Southampton Arts Center, in partnership with Hamptons Doc Fest, is pleased to present a special outdoor screening of the ESPN 1986 Mets docuseries debut “30 for 30: Once Upon a Time in Queens,” about the Mets’ 1986 World Series-winning season. The panel will feature sports writer Mike Lupica as emcee and film director and producer Nick Davis. This free event includes complimentary popcorn, Cracker Jack, soft drinks, and swag.

SAC Business Circle Membership Kick-off Networking Event, Saturday, September 11, at 6 p.m.

Tom Dunn, SAC executive director and Deborah Van Zijl, SAC Business Circle chair, invite the community to join them for a special networking event introducing SAC’s Business Circle, a membership group and source for proven arts and partnership strategies, business networking, and after-hours fun. Wine and cheese will be served.

A live Hamptons Jazz Fest performance follows.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest with Big Chief Donald Harrison and NOLA Legacy Ensemble, Saturday, September 11, at 7 p.m.

Hamptons Jazz Fest concerts are intended to expose as many people as possible to the wonderful diverse world of jazz music with free concerts, small and large, and accessible to all. Cultural diversity and roots of jazz will be celebrated with performing artists from the United States and around the World. This performance features Big Chief Donald Harrison and NOLA Legacy Ensemble.

Film + Panel: “Strong-Cuevas,” Sunday, September 12, at 4 p.m.

The sculptural language of Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas originates from the basic form of the human head. Whether simplified through the use of contours and profiles, or by the reduction of details in the case of the monumental works, her abstract faces symbolize a universal human condition throughout time. “Strong-Cuevas,” a film by Lana Jokel, is a visual journey of the creative process of the artist. A panel featuring Jokel, Strong-Cuevas, and director and chief curator of Guild Hall, Christina Strassfield, and reception follow. This event will be held inside the SAC theater. Masks and proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test required.

Film: Surf Movie Night with Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island Chapter, Monday, September 13, at 5 p.m.

Southampton Arts Center welcomes the Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island Chapter for its 19th annual Surf Movie Night. A surf swap followed by surf-inspired short films will be held on the west lawn.

Art: “Clearing the Air” Exhibition Opening, Friday, September 17, at noon.

Following an unprecedented year of COVID-19, political divide, racial and social strife, and injustice, “Clearing The Air” examines the healing power of the arts. This multimedia group show is curated by Jay Davis, artist and curator of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Ambulatory Care Arts Program. The exhibition features regional and national artists who turned to the arts to overcome health and personal challenges, and those who regularly work in the healing art space.

Live: Silent Disco, Saturday, September 18, at 7 p.m.

Come dance under the full moon at this outrageously fun (and quiet) rave featuring two DJ’s and multiple music genres. Quiet Events provides their three-channel LED-style headphones allowing guests to change channels to different types of music. Headphones light up with colors assigned to each channel so dancers can see what others are listening to based on the color of their headphones. At any given moment you might find a group of friends dancing to three different styles of music, which makes this event entertaining not only for the participants, but for onlookers as well.

Film + Panel: “Soul Redemption,” Sunday, September 19, at 6 p.m.

A visual healing experience through the mysterious love story of two seemingly separate individuals, which rapidly become tangled on their path to spiritual healing in New York. A panel prior to the film features director Richard Burns and actors Joshua Murphy, Alan Steinfeld, and Val Tignini.

Film + Panel: “My Octopus Teacher,” Saturday, September 24, at 7 p.m.

“My Octopus Teacher” is a 2020 Netflix Original documentary film directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, which documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster forging a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest. At the 93rd Academy Awards, it won the award for Best Documentary. A panel will take place prior to the film.

Wellness: Sound Meditation, Saturday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m.

A soothing, deeply relaxing and immersive Sound Meditation led by Bowl Master and Meditation DJ Daniel Lauter.
