Showtime’s highest rated comedy special in 2019, “Funny Women of a Certain Age,” returns to The Suffolk on Saturday, February 3, at 7 p.m.

What began as a fun way to work with her friends has exploded into a comedy brand of its own. When Carole Montgomery (a stand-up comedy veteran of over 40 years) started in the business, you would never see two female comics on the same show. Fast forward to today’s comedy scene and nothing has changed despite there being more women in comedy. “Funny Women of a Certain Age” was created to give older women comics a chance to be seen and heard. In no time at all, Montgomery’s idea become a Showtime special, ranking as the network’s highest rated premiere of a stand up show in 2019 and making television history as the first comedy special to feature 6 women over the age of 50.

The comedians who appear in “Funny Women of a Certain Age” are all brilliant, funny, and vibrant — and it just so happens that they are all of a certain age. These are the women who paved the way — blazed the trail — for the female comedians you see performing today. This is a show straight from the unfettered mouths and uninhibited minds of the funniest, most daring, most experienced people in comedy: the women that have seen it all. This performance will feature:

Carole Montgomery: Creator of “Funny Women of a Certain Age,” Montgomery is hailed by The San Antonio Express as “one of the pioneering female comics of the modern era” and The Seattle Times calls her “one of the strongest women working today.”

Julia Scotti: Audiences may know Scotti from “America’s Got Talent” where Simon Cowell said, “you genuinely made me laugh!” as well as the Today Show with Hoda and Jenna. She has been named one of the Top Five Transgendered Comedians in the Country by “Advocate Magazine” and is considered to be “our next Betty White” by industry magazine “Deadline.”

Leighann Lord: Lord is frequently heard on XM-Sirius Satellite Radio and has appeared on many stand-up comedy shows on Showtime, Lifetime, HBO, Comedy Central, VH1, ABC’s The View, SiTV, Gospel Music Channel, and ASPIRE TV. She was also named one of New York’s 10 Hot Comics by “Improper Magazine”.

Tickets for “Funny Women of a Certain Age” are $59 to $69 at thesuffolk.org. Suffolk Theater is at 118 East Main Street, Riverhead.
