Gloria Steinem, an globally recognized feminist, journalist, social and political activist, will speak at a fundraiser for The Retreat hosted at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m.
The Retreat was founded in 1987 and provides support for individuals and families in crisis that are victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault.
Young adults will have the opportunity to interview her and hear about her life and experiences. The Thunderbird Sisters of the Shinnecock Nation will also perform a few songs before Ms. Steinem takes the stage.
Ms. Steinem’s personal interests correspond well with the mission of The Retreat. She is specifically interested in the common origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice.
“We are honored and thrilled to have Gloria Steinem as our guest speaker at Guild Hall. Ms. Steinem is a champion of equal right and civil rights, not only for women but for all individuals worldwide,” Loretta K. Davis, the Executive Director of the Retreat said.
