Pastor Frank A. White and the King’s Chapel Church of God in Christ have announced that “a taste of Jazz at Lincoln Center” will be arriving on the East End—for one night only—just in time for the holidays.
Known as the “Ella Fitzgerald” of gospel jazz, Kim Burrell will present a concert on Saturday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Southampton High School’s 1,000-seat auditorium. Also featured on the bill with this critically-acclaimed vocalist will be performances by several premier local artists.
Ms. Burrell is a Grammy Award-winning, multi-talented singer, songwriter and musician. Tickets are $20, or $30 for VIP seating, and Dr. White noted that a number of concert-goers have already bought extra tickets for use as pre-Christmas stocking stuffers or Secret Santa or Hanukkah gifts.
“Kim is the perfect performer to ring in Christmas here in the Hamptons,” said Dr. White, pastor of the 350-member historic King’s Chapel Church. “She is a phenomenal artist with unparalleled vocal ability.”
Grammy Award-winning vocalist Donnie McClurkin who performed during the King’s Chapel summer’s end tent revival—A Celebration on Sunrise—also attests to Ms. Burrell’s vocal skills.
“I performed on TBN [Trinity Broadcast Network] with Kim Burrell,” Ms. McClurkin said. “If you’ve never heard her, you’re in for a treat. When Kim gets on the stage, she makes singers like me back up.”
Pastor White, a former Wall Street executive who now also serves as national financial secretary for the six million-member Church of God in Christ (COGIC), said the concert is “just what we need to remind us of the real meaning of Christmas.”
“This economic quagmire has so many people worried about health care,” Dr. White said. “We’re presenting this concert to offer hope and healing to the hurting. Christmas is not just about getting and receiving gifts. It’s about showing the love of Christ.”
With her latest release, “No Ways Tired,” which has already captured the attention of the 2010 Grammy and Stellar Award-nominating committees to earn a total of seven nominations overall, Ms. Burrell is just the vocalist, Dr. White said, “to soothe the pain from the crunch that so many people are feeling.”
This is the first performance in the Hamptons for Ms. Burrell, who is no stranger to sold-out performances. She’s been featured on BET’s “Celebration of Gospel,” tag-teamed with Kirk Franklin, and has had standing-room-only performances at Radio City Music Hall and the Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame.
The well-traveled vocalist, who has performed at some of the world’s greatest venues, will arrive on Saturday, December 19, at Southampton High School, 141 Narrow Lane. Ticket reservations are available by contacting the church’s newly reconstructed executive offices at 57 Hillcrest Avenue at 283-8029, or by visiting KingsChapelCOGIC.net.
Under the leadership of Dr. White, the membership of King’s Chapel COGIC has grown to 350 in the last 11 years of his pastorate, drawing members from as far west as Queens. Pastor White has effectively reorganized the internal ministries of The Chapel, reviving the membership with his ministerial thrust of “Marketplace Ministry: Taking the Church Outside the Box.”
