The Bridgehampton Museum is presenting “David Ebner: Five Decades of Original Studio Furniture Handcrafted on Long Island,” a retrospective exhibition of works by furniture maker David N. Ebner. The show opens with a reception on Friday, September 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. and runs through October 25 at the Nathaniel Rogers House.
David N. Ebner has produced studio furniture for five decades, working in four modes: classical furniture, sculptural furniture, turned objects and functional furniture. He studied at the School for American Craftsmen at the Rochester Institute of Technology under Wendell Castle, and later at the London School of Furniture Design. After a two-year military service, he established his studio on the South Shore of Long Island in 1973.
Ebner’s work is known for elegant simplicity and a concern with material honesty. His designs draw inspiration from the landscape and wood’s intrinsic qualities, exploring traditional forms through new perspectives. He has exhibited widely — including in “Exploration II: The New Furniture” at the American Crafts Museum — and his furniture is in the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Collection of Fine Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago and other institutions.
“David Ebner: Five Decades of Original Studio Furniture Handcrafted on Long Island” will be on view Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The Nathaniel Rogers House is at 2539 Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton. For more information, visit bridgehamptonmuseum.org.
