The entry period for the 26th annual Hamptons International Film Festival is now open and documentarians have even more incentive to submit this year—HIFF is now an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences qualifying festival for the Documentary Short Subject Award.

Documentary Short Film is just one of four competitive categories at HIFF, which will be held October 6 through 10 at venues in East Hampton, Southampton and Sag Harbor. Filmmakers can also compete in Narrative Feature, Narrative Short and Documentary Feature.

HIFF was previously established as an Academy qualifying festival for Short Live Actions Films. Now winners in HIFF’s Documentary Short Film category and Narrative Short Film category can become eligible for Oscar contention without needing a standard theatrical release, provided the films adhere to the Academy rules.

“We are honored to now have two of our award categories recognized by the Academy,” HIFF program director David Nugent said. “Each year this festival grows, making it even more exciting to see the wealth of talent and art it attracts.”

HIFF reported a record number of entries in 2015.

The early bird deadline for 2016 is April 4 and the regular deadline is May 2. The late deadline is May 30. For rules and instructions, visit hamptonsfilmfest.org.
