On the East End, Columbus Day weekend and Hamptons International Film Festival are virtually synonymous.
The 22nd annual event—screening movies across the East End from October 9 through 13—will feature “The Homesman” as its Centerpiece film, an East Coast premiere that its star, Hilary Swank, won’t be missing.
Directed by Tommy Lee Jones and based on the novel by Glendon Swarthout, “The Homesman” follows the story of three women living on the edge of the American frontier whose only chance of survival rests in the hands of Mary Bee Cuddy, portrayed by Ms. Swank, who will participate in the festival’s signature program “A Conversation With...” The film will be released by Roadside Attractions on November 7.
The first three films in the festival’s “Views from Long Island” section will be “Gabriel” by Lou Howe—who shot much of his newest film in the Hamptons—“Diplomacy,” the New York premiere of Amagansett resident Volker Schlöndorff’s latest project, and “Weenie,” a short filmed by Dan Roe in East Hampton that will make its world premiere at the festival.
