HIFF Films Garner 30 Oscar Nominations

authorStaff Writer on Mar 23, 2021

Films screened as part of last fall’s 28th Hamptons International Film Festival have garnered a total of 30 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture nominees “Nomadland,” “Minari” and “Sound of Metal,” which received six nominations each. “One Night in Miami” received three nominations, “Collective” received two (including Best Documentary Feature) and “Time” received one nomination.

Of note, Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to receive a Best Director nomination (for “Nomadland”) and Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American actor to receive a Best Actor nomination (for “Minari”).

HIFF audiences were among the first to see several of this year’s nominees. “Sound of Metal,” “Minari” and “Collective” were all East Coast premieres at the festival. Many of this year’s nominees took part in post-screening Q&As at HIFF.

Best Picture nominee “Sound of Metal” also earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination for writer-director Darius Marder, and Best Actor for star Riz Ahmed. Other nods include Best Supporting Actor (Paul Raci), Best Sound, and Best Editing.

Writer-director Lee Isaac Chung, received two nominations — Best Director and Best Original Screenplay — for the Best Picture nominee “Minari,’ which also received nominations for Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-Jung), and Best Original Score.

Writer-director Florian Zeller received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Best Picture nominee “The Father,” which also received nominations for Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Supporting Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Editing, and Best Production Design.

Screenwriter Kemp Powers earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for HIFF28’s Closing Night Film “One Night in Miami.” HIFF guest Leslie Odom Jr. also earned two nominations: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song.

Director Garrett Bradley earned a Best Documentary Feature nomination for “Time” while HIFF28 Best Documentary “Collective” received two Oscar nominations — for Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature — Romania’s first-ever nods from The Academy. Director Alexander Nanau talked with 2020 Oscar nominee Petra Costa.

Both Best Actor nominee Steven Yeun and double nominee Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”) participated in the lauded “A Conversation With…” series at HIFF28. In the coming weeks, HIFF will share those full conversations with its HamptonsFilm members. Not a member? Visit hamptonsfilm.org.
