The Grenning Gallery is currently presenting its annual solo exhibition of celebrated painter Hunt Slonem, featuring a vibrant collection of his signature birds, bunnies and butterflies. The show runs through Sunday, July 13, and concludes with a closing party on Saturday, July 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery’s Main Street location in Sag Harbor.
Slonem’s new works continue to showcase the bold color, rhythmic brushwork and meditative repetition that have made his style instantly recognizable. His subjects — rendered with joy, reverence and spiritual symbolism — transform the canvas into something more than just decoration. Through repetition, Slonem turns familiar creatures into visual mantras.
Featured in the exhibition is “Butterflies” (2009), a large-scale oil painting in which Slonem uses his signature scoring technique — cross-hatched lines carved into wet paint — to create a vibrating texture that gives the composition a sense of loft and motion. In other works like “Orioles,” bright pink backgrounds, yellow feathers and vivid red beaks come together in playful yet carefully unified harmony.
“His subjects may seem simple but they carry a deeper energy,” says Laura Grenning, the gallery’s founder. “These paintings fill a space with life — they are joyful, spiritual and timeless.”
Slonem’s work appears in more than 250 museum collections worldwide and is represented by over 80 galleries globally. His paintings remain on view year-round at the Grenning Gallery.
In addition to the exhibition, the Grenning Gallery returns to the Hamptons Fine Art Fair, taking place July 10 to July 13 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Southampton Fairgrounds, 605 County Road 39, Southampton. Hunt Slonem will appear for a book signing on Friday, July 11, at 4 p.m. Visitors to the Grenning Gallery’s booth at the fair will have the opportunity to meet the artist and purchase signed copies of his monographs.
