Judith Hudson, this month’s Insight Sunday artist at The Church, wants to tweak expectations. On Sunday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., come celebrate the freedom of women to be as humorous, desirous, covetous and boisterous as they please.

Working in watercolor, Hudson is known for her quixotic images and her colorful depiction of our all-too-human-foibles. Often, she takes themes of sexual transgression and uses humor to turn them around and expose (pun intended) the good, bad, and inequitable behavior between men and women.

“I want to dispel the myth that boys seek, and girls fend off,” Hudson explained.

In her most recent series, the androgynous figure of the clown serves as our alter-egos in the performance of the self, with exaggerated make-up and clothes. Although she may enjoy the ridiculousness of the human condition, her intuitive works always express empathy. Her subversion of historical, social, and physical norms highlights the fact that despite our faults, all we have is each other.

Insight Sundays, held at The Church on the last Sunday of each month, provide individual artists with the opportunity to talk in depth about their processes, techniques and concepts in the presence of their work. The program allows the audience to see through the artist’s eye. It is a monthly program open to the public and free to members, $10 for nonmembers. Stop by prior to Insight Sunday to view Hudson’s work, which will be on display through May 28, Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 pm.

Judith Hudson grew up in New Jersey and received an MFA at California College of Art. Her paintings have been dealing with sexual transgression and humor since 2010, with the view that “women should be allowed to be as offensive and have as much fun as men.” She has shown this work at Tripoli Gallery in Wainscott, Salomon Contemporary in New York City and Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles. She has also shown locally at the Parrish Art Museum, and Guild Hall.

The Church is at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. For more information, visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
