If you like murder mysteries and comedy, then the Hampton Theatre Company’s (HTC) first play of the 2019-2020 season is right up your (dark) alley.
On October 24, HTC opens “Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery,” at the Quogue Community Hall. Directed by the company’s artistic director Diana Marbury, the play has Sherlock Holmes investigating the fatal curse afflicting the male heirs of the Baskerville line. Ludwig’s script transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles” into a murderously funny adventure in which Holmes and Watson, on the search for the ingenious killer, must sort out a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit.
The cast of this production features four HTC company veterans — Andrew Botsford, Matthew Conlon (as Sherlock Holmes), and Ben Schnickel — as well as HTC newcomer Duncan Hazard (in the role of Dr. Watson). Impressively, three of the actors portray some 40 different characters on stage.
Ludwig is a two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright whose work is performed throughout the world in more than 30 countries and at least 20 languages. A master of comedy, he has written 25 plays and musicals, including HTC hits like “Lend Me a Tenor” (1993), “Moon Over Buffalo” (2008) and last season’s “Comedy of Tenors.”
“Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville" runs Thursday, October 24 to Sunday, November 10, at the Quogue Community Hall on Jessup Avenue. Set design is by Sean Marbury with lighting by Sebastian Paczynski, sound by Seamus Naughton and costumes by Teresa Lebrun. Shows are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. An additional matinee performance will be offered during the final weekend of the production, on Saturday, November 9. A talkback with the cast will be offered following the Friday, November 1, 7 p.m. performance.
HTC is offering special dinner theater packages in collaboration with the Westhampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays and Quogue libraries. A special lunch theater package is also available for the Saturday matinee on November 9, with lunch before the show at the Quogue Club at the Hallock House.
