The Parrish Art Museum continues its 2017 summer outdoor music series with “Jazz on the Terrace” featuring the Hendrik Meurkens Quartet in an evening of Brazilian-influenced jazz on Friday, July 28 at 6 p.m.

Meurkens, a harmonica and vibraphone virtuoso, is considered a master of Brazilian jazz and a regular of the New York jazz scene. He appeared in the museum’s 2015 jazz concert series and is joined this summer by pianist Misha Tsiganov, bass player Gustavo Amarante and drummer, Rogério Boccato.

“I much look forward to listening to Hendrik Meurkens’ unique fusion of Brazilian, American and European jazz tunes on the terrace,” Curator of Special Projects Corinne Erni said.

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Meurkens started the path of a musician as a teenager. After mastering the vibraphone and chromatic harmonica, he pursued formal studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston as a vibraphone major. In 1982 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, invited by Brazilian harmonica player and composer of bossa nova, Mauricio Einhorn. Native Brazilian musicians have praised his understanding of the Brazilian music vocabulary. In 1992, Concord Records in the U.S. signed him on.

The Parrish Art Museum is located at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. For more information, visit parrishart.org or call (631) 283-2118.
