For many years, Josh Dayton channeled his inner abstract expressionist, influenced by the classic pioneers in their time. This approach produced thickly painted, improvised canvases, locking him into the compositions with constant revision and layers upon layers of pigment.
With his newest show, on view Saturday and Sunday at Ashawagh Hall in Springs, he is breaking that mold.
“In the new works, I have been gluing cut-up paper to the canvas instead of direct painting,” Dayton explained. “This frees one to add or subtract as many times as necessary to achieve a spontaneous end without overpainting, to create more open compositions through use of simpler forms.”
