Southampton Arts Center (SAC) welcomes July with kids’ events, films and much more. In addition, SAC’s current exhibition, “A Moment in Time: Iconic Images by Harry Benson” curated by Sally Martin Katz, is open Thursday through Monday from noon to 5 p.m. Southampton Arts Center is located at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. Studio: Chess Class — Sundays, July 9, 23 and 30, at 1 p.m.

Discover the art of chess at Studio Chess. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player, this engaging workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the captivating world of chess within a creative setting. Join in for a series of interactive sessions led by a professional chess instructor, who will guide you through the fundamentals of the game and help you develop strategic thinking skills. From understanding the basic moves to exploring advanced tactics, you’ll gain valuable insights that will enhance your chess prowess.

Kids: The Craft Studio — Mondays, July 10, 17, 24 and 31, various times

Join SAC for The Craft Studio. All the way from New York City, these 45-minute art classes are where toddlers can experience an exploration of art. With step-by-step art lessons and quick-changing activities, it is the perfect way to get your little ones excited to craft. Each class ends with a dance party to get the wiggles out. This is a with-caregiver class and requires adult participation.

Studio: Voices Carry — Thursdays, July 6, 13 and 27, at 10 a.m.

Learn the art of Cabaret with Kristen Stein and Nanne Allecia, in a safe, supportive environment and dazzle your friends and family with your passionate performance. Let your inner rock (pop, country, jazz) star shine.

Film: “Harry Benson: Shoot First” — Friday, July 7, at 6 p.m.

Renowned photographer Harry Benson rose to fame alongside the Beatles, having been assigned to cover their inaugural trip to the United States in 1964. With unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, Benson captured some of the most vibrant and intimate portraits ever taken of the most popular band in history

Studio: Figure Drawing Workshop — Fridays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 1 p.m.

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working toward one long pose. Registration is required.

Live: “Kip & Sylvia - Tonight on D-Deck” — Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m.

Revel in the hilarious misadventures of Kip and Sylvia Glasscock, an eccentric husband and wife songwriting team, as they take center stage with their failed show tunes and uproarious stories from their unhappily married life.

Talk: A Whale’s Tale: Panel and screening of “Saving the Right Whales” – Sunday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m.

SAC and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) are partnering to present an evening about the history of whaling on the East End of Long Island and the current efforts being taken to save this species from extinction.

Kids: Ramblin’ Dan’s Freewheelin’ Band — Tuesdays, July 11, 18 and 25, various times

Ramblin’ Dan’s Freewheelin’ Band provides high energy and engaging music classes for kids, from infants to 4 years old. Driven by playful musicality and skillful guitar work, sessions are about having fun in pressure-free and comforting atmosphere, helping kids gain confidence.

Kids: SAC’s 10th Birthday Party — Wednesday, July 12, at 1 p.m.

Celebrate SAC’s monumental 10th birthday with a day of unforgettable festivities, including interactive art exhibitions, engaging workshops, live performances, and a host of delightful surprises that will captivate both the young and the young-at-heart.

Kids: Timbalooloo Live Concert for Children — Thursday, July 13, at 3 p.m.

Join Southampton Arts Center, in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest, for a children’s concert with Timbalooloo! Timbalooloo seeks to uplift communities by exposing children and families to the richness of global culture in New York and beyond.

Wellness: Sound Bath & Meditative Music Concert — Friday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy a blissful sound bath, and meditative music concert, relax in the twilight and summer evening setting, and take in the soothing vibrations played by two of the leading sound artists in the field (weather permitting).

Talk Harry Benson & Sally Martin Katz — Saturday, July 15, at 4 p.m.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest – Mike Lawrence Legacy Band — Saturday, July 15, at 7 p.m.

Southampton Arts Center, in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest presents Mike Lawrence Legacy Band. Marking the 40th year since the extraordinary trumpeter/composer Mike Lawrence’s sudden and tragic passing at the age of 37, this multi-generation, top-tier sextet, helmed by trumpeter Chris Rogers and Long Island-based tenor saxophonist Sam Dillon, present the intriguing original compositions that Lawrence performed in New York City jazz clubs from 1977 to 1982, usually with Michael Brecker on tenor sax.

Film: “I Am Not Ok” - Friday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Southampton Arts Center, in collaboration with Southampton African American Museum (SAAM), presents a short film about a mother and son responding to the unending killings of Black Americans amidst the backdrop of the protests that followed the death of George Floyd. Dance and archival photographs are woven together to evoke fear, outrage, and anger and the need for communities to come together to support each other and find solutions.

Live: “Change Agents: Women Collectors Shaping the Art World” Opening Reception — Saturday, July 22, at 5 p.m.

This summer, for its 10th anniversary, SAC presents “Change Agents: Women Collectors Shaping the Art World,” an exhibition that showcases the unparalleled vision of 14 women collectors dedicated to championing artists and their practices. The exhibition celebrates these international pioneers whose missions are matched by their generosity to advocate for the most critically acclaimed and emerging artists of our time.

Studio: Mah Jongg — Thursday, July 27, at 1:30 p.m.

Learn to play the fun, challenging, and thought-provoking game of American Mah Jongg. This six-week course covers all aspects of the game including understanding the card, selecting and playing your hand, and pick up playing strategies all leading to the ultimate Mah Jongg. Registration is required.

Talk: “What’s Your Style? Stylish Interiors for Modern Lifestyle” — Thursday, July 27, at 5:30 p.m.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest – Bakithi Kumalo — Saturday, July 29, at 7 p.m.

Southampton Arts Center, in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest will present Bakithi Kumalo Band. Born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg, South Africa, and surrounded by relatives who loved music and actively performed, with traditional African rhythms and a cappella vocal groups all around him. Landing his first job at the age of seven filling in for his uncle’s bass player, he continued to work as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, and was soon recognized as a top session bassist, accompanying international performers during their South African tours.

Film: “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture I & II - I Like to Be Awed” – Director Lana Jokel — Sunday, July 30, at 5 p.m.

Director Lana Jokel honors her late close friend Strong-Cuevas. The sculptural language of Strong-Cuevas originates from the basic form of the human head. Whether simplified through the use of contours and profiles, or by the reduction of details in the case of the monumental works, her abstract faces symbolize a universal human condition throughout time. The film will be followed by a wine reception.
