Koller to speak on hedges at next Horticultural Alliance meeting

author on Jan 7, 2010

Gary Koller, a horticulturist specializing in woody ornamental plants, will discuss how using hedges adds structure to our residential gardens at the next meeting of the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. His illustrated lecture will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, in the main auditorium of the Bridgehampton Community House.

Now president of his own firm, Koller and Associates in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, Mr. Koller has degrees in public garden administration, ornamental horticulture and landscape design from three different universities. He was formerly assistant director for horticulture at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and a visiting faculty member at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the University of Massachusetts.

He lectures widely, particularly for the Landscape Institute, and contributes articles to Fine Gardening, American Nurseryman and other publications. His awards include a gold medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for skill in communicating about horticulture.

Non-members of the Horticultural Alliance will be asked for a $10 donation to attend the lecture meeting; members are admitted free. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 537-2223.

The following week, on Saturday, January 16, the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons will hold its next informal roundtable study session at the Horticultural Library on the ground floor of the Bridgehampton Community House beginning at 10 a.m. The current season’s focus is on vines, and the topic this time will be clematis.

There will also be time to discuss other matters of interest to the participants. George Simonson is the moderator and admission is free to all.
