Renowned filmmaker Lana Jokel will present her latest film, “Ethereal: Alice Hope Art,” at the Southampton Arts Center on August 4 at 6 p.m.

Born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Brazil, Jokel brings a global perspective to her documentaries, having studied languages and fine arts extensively in France and the United States. Her career began alongside American pioneers Leacock and Pennebaker, and she has since edited films on luminaries such as Norman Mailer, Larry Rivers, Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas and Andy Warhol, as well as numerous documentaries on art and music. In 2024, her 22 films archive was acquired by Centre Pompidou, Paris.

A renowned multimedia artist, Alice Hope is celebrated for her innovative use of can tabs as a primary medium, Hope’s work transcends traditional artistic boundaries, blending elements of High and Low art to create pieces that are both accessible and profound. A wine reception will follow the screening.

“Ultimately my work is devoted to the tension between Minimalism/Maximalism and numeracy’s hybrid aesthetic. Juxtaposing High and Low Art, allowing it to be accessible to all”, said Hope.

Hope’s accolades include being named the 2018 “Woman to Watch” for New York by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, a testament to her profound impact on contemporary art. She holds an M.F.A. from Yale University and exhibits her work at the prestigious Ricco/Maresca Gallery in Manhattan. Her public and residential commissions, such as the monumental magnetic installation “Under the Radar” at Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, commissioned by the Parrish Art Museum, exemplify her penchant for integrating binary code and repetition into compelling compositions.

Southampton Arts Center is at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. For more information visit southamptonartscenter.org.
