Local author and publisher James Monaco will discuss the latest edition of his essential work, “How To Read a Film: Movies, Media and Beyond,” at Canio’s Books in Sag Harbor on Saturday, June 6, at 6 p.m.
Since its original publication in 1977, the popular book has become a definitive source on film and media. Mr. Monaco looks at film from many vantage points, as art and craft, sensibility and science, tradition and technology. He examines film’s relation to the novel, painting, photography, television, and music as well as how best to understand all that a film has to convey.
Molly Haskell calls the book a “landmark in media studies.” Janet Maslin praised Monaco’s ability to collect “an enormous amount of useful information and assemble it in an exhilaratingly simple and systematic way.”
Mr. Monaco is also the author of “American Film Now,” “The New Wave,” “The Encyclopedia of Film,” and “The Connoisseur’s Guide to the Movies.” He publishes local interest books under the Hamptons Electronic Publishing imprint.
