The LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden in East Hampton, will host a Family Day celebration on Saturday, May 27, headlined by visits from two children’s literature luminaries: illustrator Hilary Knight and author Katharine Holabird.
Originally slated to take place on Mother’s Day weekend, Family Day was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Previously a two-day event, it will now take place soley on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Family Day, in its third annual edition, will also include a tour of LongHouse Reserve’s expansive garden, a bird watching walk, art projects and music
Born in Hempstead and now a seasonal East Hampton resident, Mr. Knight is best known as the illustrator of Kay Thompson’s “Eloise” series. He was recently profiled in the April issue of Vanity Fair, a publication for which he is a former contributing artist. His work has been showcased at the Giraffics Gallery in East Hampton and an exhibition dubbed “Eloise and the Museum” is set to run at the New York Historical Society in June.
Miss Holabird, also a seasonal East End resident, is renowned for penning her “Angelina Ballerina” series. The series’s first book, originally published in 1983, is soon to reach its 35 anniversary. She will read selections of her mousey tales as a local ballerina accompanies with dance.
LongHouse’s garden, including 60 ethnographic and handcrafted sculptures from the likes of Yoko Ono, Max Rosenthal and Willlem de Kooning, serves “as a living case study of the interaction between plants and people in the 21st century,” LongHouse’s website says. Neo-futurist architect Buckminster Fuller’s “Fly’s Eye Dome,” a geodesic bubble inspired by the shape of a fly’s eye and originally envisioned to be a fully autonomous home, is one of the most prominent sculptures.
Kellye Rosenheim, the director of development of the New York City Audubon and co-author of “Bird Watching in New York City and on Long Island,” will host the guided bird watching tour.
Although LongHouse Reserve typically requires payment for entry, admission to Family Day will be free and open to the public.
