Tripoli Gallery will present “Birds,” a solo exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Mamoun Nukumanu, running May 3 through June 2. The show open with a reception on Saturday, May 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. and in it, he revisits his living sculptures, which have been growing outside the gallery in Wainscott over the past year, going dormant this past winter and rebudding this spring, as the artist repositioned and maneuvered each work. This exhibition culminates the artist’s residency, which began on March 25, 2024.

Nukumanu is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist who guides living trees in temporal dances. Nukumanu’s work explores the semiotic entanglement of ecology, mind, and body to create doorways to other worlds. Deeply passionate about ecological regeneration, he imagines the growth of symbiotic futures through the reforestation of the Earth and the reestablishment of the ecology commons through the collective cultivation of living tree cities.

“Birds” celebrates nature as an interwoven fabric of living bodies. Energy flows from being to being in a great chain, as the bodies of the dead make way for forms of living mind. Nukumanu engages in a complex mold making process that moves from idea to entanglement as a sacred void is enclosed in living branches. “Birds” is a call for metaphysical nest making, asking us to merge with the mind of arboreal spirit guides in the creation of collaborative landscapes. Through this process of entanglement, we become birds in a city of light. The show moves from windows to dream worlds on paper to large scale living sculptures.

Nukumanu’s largest work to date is shown as a permanent installation at “The Ranch” in Montauk, which opened in 2024. In 2021, the artist participated in “Look Alive” at Guild Hall in East Hampton. He currently has permanent works planted in Woodstock, New York, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor and Pennsylvania. Mamoun Nukumanu was the fifth artist-in-residence at Tripoli Gallery in 2024.

Tripoli Gallery is at 26 Ardsley Road in Wainscott. Visit tripoligallery.com for details.
