Bay Street Theater is the place for music on the South Fork this month. From a musical evening that celebrates the greatest female vocalists of the last half century and a benefit for the victims of the recent earthquake in Syria and Turkey, to a tribute to the musical genius of Prince, the bands will be “in the house,” so to speak, and ready to rock and roll.
“Women of Soul” — Saturday, March 4, 8 p.m. $35.
Hosted by The HooDoo Loungers the evening features Dawnette Darden along with Mama Lee and Rose Lawler who will perform the music of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, the Staple Singers, and many more women of soul in celebration of Women’s History Month.
The HooDoo sold out their “Queen of Soul — Tribute to Aretha Franklin” concert as part of the 2019 Sag Harbor American Music Festival, and amazed audiences with their last “Soul Spectacular” performance in 2022. This special evening celebrates the music of some of the most iconic, beloved, and legendary female singers of the golden age of soul.
“A Concert for Syria and Turkey” — Thursday, March 9, 7 p.m. Donation of $20 and up.
This humanitarian relief concert is offered in support of the victims of the 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake and includes performances by Gene Casey, The Hoodoo Loungers, and other special guests. It is presented in a collaboration between Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman and Bay Street Theater. All proceeds benefit Oxfam International, which is on the ground in both countries working to provide immediate relief for millions displaced by the earthquake. Benefits by Bay Street is a program begun years ago that has raised money for victims of disasters in Haiti, Japan, Ukraine and elsewhere.
“The February 6th earthquake wreaked havoc on Turkey and Syria,” says Schneiderman. “The human death toll has been enormous. We, here in the Hamptons, like other communities around the world, must come together at this time of great need to support the Turkish and Syrian people. Although they may live in distant lands, we, as fellow human beings, have a moral responsibility to help ease their suffering.”
In addition to the music, the evening includes a round of raffle prizes. Admission is a suggested donation of $20 and up.
“Kissed by a Prince” — Saturday, March 11, 8 p.m. $35.
On April 21, 2016, the world lost one of the most profound musicians of our time — Prince Rogers Nelson. Since his 1978 debut album, “For You,” his music has filled airwaves with raw musical emotion. This live concert performance is a tribute to the late legendary artist and will feature an all-star lineup of local musicians who are joining forces for the first time to bring his music to a live audience. Led by vocalists Dawnette Darden of The HooDoo Loungers, also performing will be guitarist Mike Mazzaraco, bassist Klyph Black, drummer Kevin Santacruz, keyboardist Etienne Lytle and percussionist Bopa King Carré.
“All of the performers have been inspired by, and have performed Prince’s music for decades,” said Mazzaraco. “We are honored to have the opportunity to pay tribute to this musical great.”
Tickets for all shows are available at 631-725-9500 or baystreet.org. Bay Street Theater is on Long Wharf in Sag Harbor.
