Last summer, the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in Springs and the Elaine de Kooning House in East Hampton launched a joint artist residency program, inviting Montreal-based painter Marie‑Claire Chabauty as its first artist-in-residence.
Her work is now featured in the exhibition “House Guest,” currently on view at the Pollock-Krasner House.
The exhibition presents a series of architectural portraits that reflect Chabauty’s time immersed in the creative legacies of the historic homes of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and Elaine de Kooning. Her acrylic paintings blend abstraction with architectural detail, evoking the intangible energy left behind in each studio space. The works hover between dreamlike interpretation and emotional documentation, inviting viewers to feel the unseen presence of the artists who once lived and worked there.
Marie‑Claire Chabauty is a visual artist from Montreal, Quebec. Her creative process begins with photography and evolves through vibrant acrylic paintings focused on formal elements such as color, shape and texture.
“By doing so, I provoke distortions, simplifications, overlaps, omissions,” she writes in her artist statement. “The painting becomes its own narrative.”
Themes in her work include memory, transformation, mythology, and the relationship between spectacle and spectator.
The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center is a National Historic Landmark and the former home and studio of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. Through tours, exhibitions and educational programs, the center preserves the legacies of these two influential painters. It is a founding member of Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Elaine de Kooning House has hosted residencies, exhibitions and cultural events since 2011, featuring artists such as Laurie Anderson, Lonnie Holley and Mary Weatherford. The home and studio were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022 and are affiliated with the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program.
“House Guest” remains on view at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, 830 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton, through August 3. For more information, visit pkhouse.org.
