From Thursday, September 18, through Sunday, October 5, the Water Mill Museum will present “Explorations,” a solo exhibition by Southampton resident Marilyn Stevenson. On view will be of 18 monotype prints and 15 photographs, all of which Stevenson has been creating over the course of her career. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The exploration of unpredictability best describes Stevenson’s continuing study of photographic light drawings and monotype prints. Both artistic approaches create compositions that project a sense of light, energy and movement forming patterns that invite subjective interpretations. The intentional camera movements and the creation of the monotype plates both lead to unpredictability of abstract form, color, movement and spatial relationships.
Stevenson studied art and photography at the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography. In addition to pursuing her own fine art she has been curator and assistant director at New Century Art Gallery in Chelsea since 2001. She has also curated exhibits at Gracie Mansion and The Salmagundi Arts Club, both in New York City.
Stevenson has worked as an art director, graphic designer and technical illustrator for a number of national magazines. She has had 20 solo exhibits and over 80 group shows throughout the United States. Her first international exhibit was in Graz, Austria.
Currently, Stevenson curates local exhibitions annually for East End Photographers Group and Southampton Artists Association at venues including Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton, the Water Mill Museum and Southampton Town Hall.
The Water Mill Museum is at 41 Old Mill Road in Water Mill.
