A long-time part-time Sag Harbor resident and painter, Maud Bryt will be exhibiting 16 new abstract oil paintings based on a year of her travels at T Gallery in Southampton with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on August 24. This exhibit will be displayed through September 21.
“This new group of oil paintings, based on a year of travel, represents a breakthrough for me into an abstract language which feels very direct and expressive of my responses to places. I've spent summers in Sag Harbor since 1996, and this is my first exhibit out East,” Bryt said. The artist was inspired by Giorgio Morandi, Henri Matisse and David Smith, fascinated by color, balance and musical forms as she approached her work.
Bryt was born in New York City and went on to receive her Bachelors Degree from Harvard University and Master of Fine Arts from the New York Studio School. She has exhibited her work around the United States and in the United Kingdom, but this is her first exhibit on the East End. In 2015, her painting was selected out of 2,748 entries by artists from 92 countries to be one of 50 paintings in the BP Portrait award exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
“The paintings grew out of my last series of sculptures, using a similar language of block-forms, but in the paintings I use thin veils of color, mostly rubbed in, to evoke the light-colors as I feel them,” she said of the new exhibit.
If you’ve ever wanted to ask questions about abstract art or are curious how modern artists develop a painting, Bryt will give an artist’s talk at T Gallery in Southampton on August 31 from 2 to 3 p.m. She will explain her artistic process and be open to audience questions. Interested older children and teens are welcome to accompany adults to this free event.
“For most people, abstract art is hard to ‘enter into,’ and a bit of talk and answers to questions they have helps them find their way in and appreciate it more than otherwise,” Bryt said.
T Gallery is located at 4 North Main Street in Southampton and open Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information and to view photos of the paintings, please visit tgallery.com or maudbryt.com.
