Opening Saturday, July 20, the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton presents a mid-season exhibition showcasing the paintings of American artist McArthur Binion alongside its summer-long exhibition of more than 60 works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne.

The featured exhibitions are curated by architect Peter Marino and are on view in his eponymous “house museum” that showcases works from his personal collection spanning from Ancient Egypt to the present day in a meticulously restored late 19th century landmark building.

Twelve paintings by Chicago-based artist McArthur Binion (b. 1946) highlight this mid-summer show. Highly influenced by language and music, Binion combines collage, drawing and painting to create complex autobiographical abstractions of painted minimalist patterns over an “under conscious” of personal documents and photographs. Sourcing narratives of an African American experience in rural America and his presence in the white-dominated heyday of American Modernism in New York City, Binion has developed a unique style of action painting which places personal memory in dialogue with visual elements of Modernism.

Complementing the Binion exhibition opening is the foundation’s signature event series “Brunch With Bob” featuring a conversation with Binion on July 20. Hosted by co-associate directors Bob Colacello and Isabelle Marino and joined by Peter Marino, the art talk consists of an intimate conversation set amid the installation of works by the artist.

The foundation’s summer programming continues with the “Peter Marino Book Club”, a series of author talks and book signings, which returns for its second year. This season’s events feature Marino who will present his new book “Ten Modern Houses” on August 3 followed by Rashid Johnson on August 17 who will present his recent book “Rashid Johnson” from Phaidon’s Contemporary Artist Series. On August 24, Kevin Kwan, the international best-selling author of “Crazy Rich Asians,” will discuss his latest novel “Lies and Weddings.”

The Peter Marino Art Foundation is open to the public for guided tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through September 28. All visits are by timed entry. Advance reservations are recommended.
