McCourt to be honored in Southampton Review

author on Jul 16, 2009

The Southampton Review, a literary magazine published by Stony Brook Southampton’s Master of Fine Arts Program in Literature and Creative Writing, will honor bestselling author and faculty member Frank McCourt in its third volume, published on July 15.

The new issue will be celebrated at a gala event, with readings by a selected group of contributors, on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Avram Theater. Former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins will read, along with distinguished guests from the writing, art and theater communities.

A member of the MFA faculty for almost a decade, Mr. McCourt turned the odds of a difficult childhood in his favor, writing his best-selling memoir, “Angela’s Ashes,” in 1996, at the age of 60. He received the National Book Circle Award that year, and was honored with the Pulitzer Prize in 1997. His other works include “’Tis,” “Teacher Man,” and “Angela and the Baby Jesus.”

The Southampton Review was first published in 2007. A natural offspring of Southampton’s MFA Program and Writers Conference, it places the works of established and emerging writers side by side in order to nurture new talent.

For information about the Writers Conference or the gala event, call 631-632-5030.
