On Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m. Southampton Arts Center (SAC) will present a special screening of the film “Captain Phillips,” which tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama. Prior to the film, Captain Richard Phillips, Michael “Ziggy” Zeigler, and special guests will discuss the real-life events, as well as issues faced by veterans today.

“SAC’s mission is community building through the arts,” said SAC executive director Tom Dunn. “Through our programs including art, talks, films, live, and kids’ program, we encourage all members of our community to gather in an open, inclusive space. We’re particularly looking forward to engaging our veteran community for this special event, and grateful to have Captain Richard Phillips, Michael Zeigler, and others join us to bring an awareness to the issues those who have served our country continue to face.”

An American merchant mariner and author, Captain Richard Phillips famously served as the captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates. This was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. Since surviving the attack, Captain Phillips has shared his inspirational story of perseverance and teamwork, during speaking appearances across the country.

A former special operations soldier, Zeigler is a professional golfer, musician, and fundraiser, having performed in more than 800 events across the United States. He has been a member of the special operations community since 2010, and is currently active in supporting special operations and helping the families of several charities, including Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Veteran Services USA, UDT SEAL Association, and several others. His philanthropic work has helped raise more than $10 million.

This event is free for veterans and SAC members. All other tickets are $10 per person. Learn more at southamptonartscenter.org/film or call 631-283-0967. Southampton Arts Center is at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton.
