Suffolk Theater will present Showtime’s highest rated 2019 comedy special, “Funny Women of a Certain Age,” on Sunday, May 21, at 7 p.m.

What began as a fun way to work with her friends has exploded into a comedy brand of its own. When Carole Montgomery (a stand-up comedy veteran of over 40 years) started in the business, you would never see two female comics on the same show. Fast forward to today’s comedy scene and nothing has changed despite there being more women in comedy. “Funny Women of a Certain Age” was created to give older women comics a chance to be seen and heard. In no time at all, Montgomery’s idea become a Showtime special, ranking as the network’s highest rated premiere of a stand up show in 2019 and making television history as the first comedy special to feature six women over the age of 50.

The comedians who appear in “Funny Women of a Certain Age” are all brilliant, funny, and vibrant — and it just so happens that they are all of a certain age. These are the women who paved the way — blazed the trail — for the female comedians seen performing today. This is a show straight from the unfettered mouths and uninhibited minds of the funniest, most daring, most experienced people in comedy: the women that have seen it all. This performance will feature Carole Montgomery, Julia Scotti, Leighann Lord.

Tickets are $39 to $59 at thesuffolk.org. Suffolk Theater is at 118 East Main Street, Riverhead.
