The Silas Marder Gallery will open a solo exhibition of recent work by Mica Marder, opening September 5, and on view through October 17. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, September 5, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Marder’s drawings, paintings and sculpture are a truly visceral experience, offering an alternative to the cool remoteness of much of today’s contemporary art. In this exhibition, Mr. Marder continues his enduring exploration of the East End’s coastal wildlife in a series of large-scale assemblage fish.

For this series, Mr. Marder sourced his materials from the flotsam and jetsam of day-to-day life. The areas surrounding his studio and welding shop are stockpiled with a trove of discarded objects, waiting to be repurposed in the form of a fin, a tail, a cheek or an eye. When revealed in Mr. Marder’s finished works, these moments of discovery are delightful, particularly as they are woven so elegantly into a whole.

The character of these creatures, some local, some archetypal, surfaces in the materials with which the artist has chosen to articulate them. While in one work, blocks of charred wood form a weighty Blackfish that hovers in a reflective white haze. In another, thin slices of patterned wood and metal are arranged in such in a way that mimics the velocity of this brightly colored fish.

Mr. Marder was born and raised in East Hampton, where he currently lives and works. He studied at Emerson College in East Essex, London, in a program rooted in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. Mr. Marder has exhibited throughout the United States, and his work is included in several prominent private collections. This will be his first solo exhibition with the gallery since 2008 and will include a number of the artist’s works on paper, as well as several recent oil paintings.

The Silas Marder Gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, call (631) 702-2306 or visit silasmarder.com.
