On Sunday, November 6, at 2:30 p.m., at Montauk Library, Alexander Wu, Yamaha piano artist, brings into focus the fascinating life and career of French composer, conductor and musician Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), the most important musical pedagogue of the modern era. Boulanger was the first woman to conduct major orchestras in America and Europe, including the BBC Symphony, Boston Symphony, Hallé, and Philadelphia orchestras. She also mentored some of the greatest 20th century composers such as Copland, Stravinsky, Bernstein, Quincy Jones, Gershwin, Piazzolla, Bacharach and Phillip Glass, enabling them to find their own distinct musical voice. Wu will perform some of Boulanger’s own compositions and works by her notable students.
Wu is a California native who makes his home in Manhattan. He has performed on international stages as both a soloist with orchestras and a chamber player with renowned artists in the classical, Latin and jazz worlds. He teaches privately in Manhattan and at City College at CUNY. He has given concerts and master classes specializing in cultural programs. Currently, Wu is on the piano faculty at Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City and he is the artistic director and co-founder of the Millennium Chamber Players.
