The latest edition of TSR: The Southampton Review, the literary and art journal published by the Stony Brook Southampton MFA in Creative Writing and Literature program, will be launched at a reception on November 20, starting at 6 p.m. at the Stony Brook Manhattan site on the 3rd floor of 101-113 East 27th Street.

The winter edition of TSR: The Southampton Review (Vol. X No. I) is a special issue that pays tribute to the late James Salter and E.L. Doctorow. The celebrated novelists and short story writers, who both lived on the South Fork, died earlier this year.

Included in the winter edition are fiction and poetry by Amy Hempel, Billy Collins, and David Lynn. Amy Hempel, whose “Collected Stories” won the Ambassador Award for best fiction of the year and was ranked as one of the New York Times “Ten Best Books of the Year,” offers a short fiction piece as vivid as ever. The issue also has fiction from esteemed Kenyon Review editor and Fulbright Scholar David Lynn. There is also poetry from critically acclaimed poet Billy Collins, a two-term United States Poet Laureate and professor in the MFA in Creative Writing and Literature program who has published more than 10 collections of poetry.

Friends and writers remembering Mr. Salter are George Saunders and Richard Ford, whose eulogies explore how the celebrated novelist and short story writer greatly impacted the literary community. Mr. Salter, who Michael Dirda once observed could “break your heart with a sentence,” was awarded the Windham-Campell Literature Prize, the PEN/Malamud Award, the Rea Award for the Short Story, and the PEN/Faulkner Award.

The special tribute issue also includes short fiction and interviews from E.L. Doctorow, a novelist, short story writer and playwright who was praised by critics for his imagination and versatility. He won more than 15 awards for his work, including a National Book Award, three National Book Critics Circle Awards, and two PEN/Faulkner Awards, among others.

Among the “many, many treasures throughout this volume,” Editor-in-Chief Lou Ann Walker singled out a few notable contributions, including a story by Thea Lim, a novelist and short story writer published by The Guardian, Salon.com, Utne Reader, among others. Also, poetry by Michelle Whittaker, Pushcart Prize Special Mention and Jody Donahue Poetry Prize winner, whose work has appeared in VINYL Poetry and The New Yorker.

On the visual arts side, the winter edition includes a portfolio by Andrea Kowch.

Cartoons are always a part of TSR, and the latest edition includes portfolios by New Yorker cartoonists and contributors Michael Maslin and Liza Donnelly and New York Times Book Review contributor Grant Snider.

“This is a literary journal that readers will keep for a very long time,” Ms. Walker said, “one they will dip into again and again, discovering new voices and visions while savoring long-standing favorites.”
