authorStaff Writer on Sep 2, 2024

Guild Hall will host Nico Muhly’s “The Bell Études” on Saturday, September 7, at 7 p.m. Guests will enjoy an evening of solo piano commissioned by Guild Hall, performed by Conor Hanick, and composed by Nico Muhly with selected works by Gabriella Smith, Samuel Adams, and Julius Eastman in an intimate evening of music.

Conceived after conversations during the pandemic, Hanick and Muhly have collaborated on several works, including the previously premiered first set of six études performed at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. Nico Muhly will be in attendance for the concert event.

Nico Muhly is an American composer who writes orchestral music, works for the stage, chamber music and sacred music. He’s received commissions from The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Tallis Scholars, King’s College and St John’s College, Cambridge, Wigmore Hal, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

Pianist Conor Hanick is regarded as one of his generation’s most inquisitive interpreters of music new and old. Hanick has recently performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Alabama Symphony and many others. He is the director of Solo Piano at the Music Academy of the West, and serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School, Mannes College, and the CUNY Graduate Center.

Tickets are $60 to $80 ($54 to $72 for Guild Hall members) at guildhall.org. Guild Hall is at 158 Main Street, East Hampton.
