The nominations for the 14th annual Teeny Awards for theatrical productions presented by 16 participating East End high schools were unveiled on May 4 by East End Arts after a panel of volunteer judges attended and reviewed dozens of student performances.

Modeled after Broadway’s Antoinette Perry Awards — better known as the Tonys — the 2016 Teeny winners will be announced and handed out at an awards ceremony, complete with red carpet, to be hosted by radio personality Walker Vreeland at Shoreham-Wading River High School on Sunday, June 5.

Celebrating excellence in high school theatrical shows across the East End since 2002, the Teeny nominations this year provided a showcase for Pierson High School talent as students scored big with one play and one musical:

Nominated for their roles in the musical “Into the Woods” were Pierson students Brendan Powell, Matthew Schiavoni, Sirena Lee Carney, Michelle Rinaldi, Emily Hallock, Anna Schiavoni, Denis Hartnett, Olivia Auperlee, Reilly Rose Schombs, Christen Heine and Ella Knibb.

The Pierson students earning a nod for “Arsenic and Old Lace” were Meg Atkinson-Barnes, Matthew Schiavoni, Courtney Kinsella, Paul Anderson, Kerrie Vila, Reilly Rose Schombs, Denis Hartnett, Eve Bishop, Ella Parker and Shanti Escalante DeMattei.

Ross School students Sophia Beck, Katie Morgan, Bernardo Sa and Nadzia Kempski also won nominations.

The Sag Harbor Board of Education officially adopted a new policy on Monday night for requirements to graduate with distinction, and also eliminated the class rank policy. Under that new system, seniors with a weighted cumulative grade point average of 100 or above will graduate summa cum laude, those with a weighted cumulative GPA of 97.5 to 99.9 will graduate magna cum laude, and those with a weighted ... 20 Nov 2024 by Cailin Riley
