Nutsa Gogaladze, a self‑taught artist, illustrator and curator from Tbilisi, Georgia, has been named the current artist‑in‑residence at the Elaine de Kooning House in East Hampton.
The residency is part of a new program launched in 2024 by the Pollock‑Krasner House and Study Center and the Elaine de Kooning House. The initiative welcomes Gogaladze this month to the two historic sites, which were once home and studio spaces for some of the most influential painters in American history.
Born in 1998, Gogaladze earned a BBA in finance from Georgian International University in 2020. In 2022, she completed a nonformal master course in creative mediation at the Center of Contemporary Art in Tbilisi. That same year, she founded “March Gallery,” a social project supporting older self‑taught Georgian artists.
Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at the Museum of the Southwest, Bernheim Zurich and the Project Gallery. Gogaladze is the illustrator of the 2023 children’s book “Wish Goes Home” and is known for her soft pastel dreamscapes, which have gained a vibrant online following.
During her residency, Gogaladze will create a new portfolio of work inspired by Springs, the East Hampton hamlet where both the Pollock‑Krasner House and the Elaine de Kooning House are located. She will also begin developing a children’s picture book based on the local landscape and community.
“Nutsa’s world is that of the fairytale,” said Matthew K. Ward, director of the Pollock‑Krasner House and Study Center. “Her soft pastel dreamscapes are delicate and magical and evocative of a very particular world. We can’t wait to see the Springs come to life through her eyes.”
The Pollock‑Krasner House and Study Center, located at 830 Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton, is a National Historic Landmark and the former home and studio of artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. The site connects visitors with the pioneering legacies of both artists through tours, exhibitions, events and public programs. It is a founding member of Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Since 2011, the Elaine de Kooning House has hosted events, exhibitions and informal artist residencies with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Katherine Bernhardt, Joe Bradley, Lonnie Holley, Susan Te Kahurangi King, Keith Mayerson, Jerry “The Marble Faun” Torre and Mary Weatherford. The house and studio at 55 Alewive Brook Road, East Hampton were placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior on January 26, 2022. The Elaine de Kooning House is an affiliate member of Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios.
