The historic Old Whalers’ (First Presbyterian) Church will continue its series of recitals on its historic organ on Sunday, July 24, with an appearance by John A. Wolfe. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. and include Felix Mendelssohn’s Sonata No. 4 and Cantabile by César Franck. There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be accepted.
Mr. Wolfe is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, where he is the recipient of the Drinkwater and Shaw organ awards. He has an M.A. in organ performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, where he studied with Walter Klauss, the Artist in Residence at Old Whalers’, and a B.A. from Vassar College. Mr. Wolfe is a 2016 winner of the E. Power Biggs fellowship awarded by the Organ Historical Society. In the 2015-16 season he has given a doctoral organ recital at the Unitarian Church of All Souls and appeared in the Bach Meditation series at Grace Episcopal Church, both in Manhattan. He also produced a trio of recitals exploring the evolution of French organ music over three centuries.
The organ at Old Whalers’ is the oldest in a church on Long Island, built in 1845 by the firm of Henry Erben in New York City. Old Whalers’ Church is a National Historic Landmark.
