“
Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
—Mohandas Gandhi
When we step onto a path of spiritual evolution, there is that seemingly all-too-familiar visitor that shows up uninvited and with its own agenda that is not in our best interests. The caller’s name is fear.
So how might we confront and deal with fear? What can we turn to on an inner level that can be our salvation? Strength.
Fear seems purposefully designed to push all our inner buttons and to challenge our strength. And strength is part of the equipment that gets us through rough spots as it aids us in bad times and makes good times better.
There is a great deal of inner satisfaction when we draw on our strength to defeat fear. At those times when we feel that we have no resources to help ourselves, we can sometimes experience an inner strength beyond any power we ever imagined we might have. When this happens, we should know we have tapped into a positive energy that we all possess. There is a genuine strength and power that we don’t create ourselves, but that is given to us when we increase our spiritual awareness.
Still, there are times in our lives when our world is turned upside down as we ride the storms of life. It almost feels as if we are in the middle of a thunderstorm. The intensity of thunder and lightning in an electrical storm is akin to the shock of fear in a spiritual storm that descends upon us at various times in our lives. Our perceptions, knowledge, and beliefs are shaken to a degree we never thought possible. As the old saying goes, “just when I thought I understood everything, I realize I know nothing.”
In the midst of the tornadoes of our emotions we are pointedly faced with those soul-searching questions: What am I doing? What do I want? Where am I going? What is my intention? What is real? One very important spiritual principle is that appearances are often deceiving. As we grow and become stronger in our lives, we learn that what appears to be true can sometimes have aspects that are not authentic. We must read between the lines and realize that there is an absolutely consistent higher truth, which is beyond the surface.
Storms come and go, and each one gives us the opportunity to grow and learn more about ourselves in the process. What gives us the power and strength to confront the consequences of our fears and weaknesses? I believe that it is trusting our innate sense of worthiness and honoring and acting on our truest feelings and intuition. Strength means pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible because your spirit guides you. The key is learning how to transform our feelings of limitations into strengths.
It seems that often we do not realize our true personal strength and power until they are challenged in some way. Each time you make a powerful choice, it makes you stronger, more capable, more aware. Most pivotal are those choices between doing what is true to your soul and what is not.
True strength is being strong in what you believe: belief in oneself, belief in the bigger picture, the higher plan. It takes great courage to open your heart and let others see how you feel, what you value, and where you are headed. There is nothing more empowering than giving someone the gift of believing in them. And it takes great strength to do this. All we have to do is reach in and realize the strength that is within us.
