You may be by yourself, but you’re not alone. That’s the philosophy of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (WHBPAC) which now through March 30 is hosting a bi-weekly Tuesday night movie series in which an assemblage of patrons and staff can all watch the wicked and the wacky, the worldly and the woebegone together.
The WHBPAC has curated a series of films available on streaming services you may already subscribe to, and will moderate a chat as patrons watch and comment about the film in real-time. Designed to be tech easy (and easy on the wallet), this program will educate, entertain and inspire up to 100 people a night. Donations to WHBPAC, which has been closed since March 2020 due to the pandemic, are very much welcomed.
The next film in the series on February 2, at 8 p.m., is “Fast Color.” Directed by Julia Hart, the film follows a young woman with supernatural abilities who must go on the run when her powers are discovered. Hunted by mysterious forces and with nowhere else to go, she flees back to her family and the farmhouse she abandoned long ago. While being pursued by the local sheriff, she begins to mend the broken relationships with her mother and daughter and learns that the power she needed was inside her all along.
Other upcoming films in the Tuesday night series are: Erin Derham’s “Stuffed,” a documentary about the surprising and unique world of taxidermy, on February 16; Laura Greenfied’s “Generation Weath,” a postcard from the edge of the American empire that captures a portrait of a materialistic, workaholic, image-obsessed culture, on March 2; Matthew Akers “Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present,” a documentary that follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major retrospective of her work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, on March 16; and “A Suitable Girl,” Sarita Khurana, Smriti Mundhra’s film that follows three young women in India struggling to maintain their identities and follow their dreams amid intense pressure to get married.
