Bay Street Theater presents Divaria Opera’s “We Are Carmen (Somos Carmen)” on Saturday, September 13, at 8 p.m. The multidisciplinary performance celebrates the 150th anniversary of the premiere of Bizet’s “Carmen” and explores its enduring influence on the music and dance of the Spanish-speaking world.
Blending opera, zarzuela and dance, “We Are Carmen” features selections from “Carmen” interwoven with works from Spain and Latin America. The production stars acclaimed Spanish mezzo-soprano Olivia Gomez, with choreography by the Sol y Sombra Dance Company and music by the New Asia Chamber Music Society (which is returning for its sixth Bay Street performance with this production).
The work embraces the idea that in “Carmen,” “all women are one woman, all at the same time,” with each role representing a different facet of the same spirit.
Founded in 2011, Divaria Opera is known for inventive productions that aim to make opera accessible to new audiences while supporting emerging artists. The company has performed across the United States and internationally, with appearances in Spain and Italy, and has been featured on outlets including New York One and Spain’s Popular TV. In addition to stage productions, Divaria is committed to bringing live performance to underserved communities and patients unable to attend concerts.
This marks Divaria Opera’s tenth appearance at Bay Street Theater and promises a vibrant evening that reimagines one of opera’s most iconic works through new cultural lenses.
Tickets are $37 to $87 at baystreet.org or 631-725-9500. Bay Street Theater is on Long Wharf in Sag Harbor.
