Greenport retirement community and assisted living facility Peconic Landing is seeking submissions for Art Without Barriers, a sculpture garden series designed for accessibility and art therapy.
Artists with an interest in touching the lives of people with memory disorders have until March 1 to submit their work. The chosen sculpture will be used as part of a therapy program that integrates art and music to enhance connections with an individual’s past.
“Expression through art is a powerful tool that can help individuals living with memory disorders reconnect with themselves,” said Gregory J. Garrett, the executive vice president and administrator of health services at Peconic Landing.
The artwork will become the centerpiece of the Discovery Garden, located in Peconic Landing’s new memory care center.
“It will become a destination within the garden, designed to hold a member’s attention while helping to bring them back to a place of comfort, if even just for a brief period,” said Dominic Antignano, Peconic Landing’s cultural arts curator.
The memory center is slated to open in May, providing a home-like environment for 16 residents with memory disorders.
Art Without Barriers currently has 18 works installed, each featuring descriptive audio and braille catalogs. The exhibition was named one of LeadingAge New York’s 2015 Innovations of the Year.
All artists are welcome to submit proposals, and the winning artist will maintain ownership of the piece and receive a $1,000 stipend. The sculpture will remain on display for two years.
Proposed works should be no greater than 36-by-36-by-84 inches, inclusive of the base. Tactile elements are encouraged. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 1. The prospectus and application are available at peconiclanding.com/lifestyle/the-arts/.
