PIanofest Grand Marathon August 7 at Stony Brook Southampton

author on Aug 3, 2010

Pianofest in the Hamptons, the master class program directed by Paul Schenly, will wrap up its 22nd season on Saturday, August 7, with a Grand Marathon Finale concert beginning at 7 p.m. in the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton.

The marathon has become a festive tradition that features an international cast of young performers who have spent the last two months studying with master teachers and giving weekly concerts. In addition to classical piano repertoire, the audience can look forward to Mr. Schenly’s introductions and gentle “roasting” of the artists.

This year’s performers range in age from 15 to 29 and attend major conservatories and universities, such as the Juilliard School, Yale University, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Stony Brook University. Their home countries include Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Korea, and Macedonia, as well as the United States. Most are already accomplished, prize-winning performers, as solo recitalists or with orchestras. Several have toured internationally.

Though all spend six to eight hours a day practicing, their non-musical pursuits cover an eclectic range of activities—from Ultimate Frisbee, ping-pong and soccer to yoga, chess and learning other languages. Admission to the August 7 concert is $15 per person, with students admitted free. Tickets are available at the door on the day of the concert only. No reservations are needed. Because the marathon concert features about a dozen performers, there will be an intermission with refreshments, and a chance to meet and greet the artists.
