Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio is currently presenting “Resilient Roots,” a contemporary art exhibition featuring work by more than 45 artists from the Shinnecock Indian Nation. The exhibition opened on Friday, August 22, and will remain on view through November 16.
“Resilient Roots” highlights the diversity and resilience of Shinnecock artists through painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. The exhibition explores Indigenous identity, cultural preservation, and contemporary expression.
From Friday, August 29, through Monday, September 1, Ma’s House will host a booth at the 79th Annual Shinnecock Powwow, a celebration of Native culture, art and tradition. On Sunday, September 7, from 3 to 5:30 p.m., the final installment of the InsiderOutsider artist series at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton will feature Savannah LeCornu (Tsimshian, Haida, Nimiipuu/Nez Perce), a self-taught artist whose work blends storytelling, identity, and visual art.
In addition, the August artist-in-residence at Ma’s House is Ingrid Yuzly Mathurin, a Haitian American multidisciplinary artist. Her work draws from the Harlem Renaissance, hip hop culture, and the Civil Rights movement, spanning oil painting, murals, and film photography. Her past projects include a 52-foot mural commissioned by Adult Swim and Living Walls ATL, and a collaboration with NFL Films on Vince’s Places, an ESPN series featuring Vince Carter. Mathurin’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum of Art in South Africa. In 2022, she received the New Futures Award from The Other Art Fair L.A. Her practice emphasizes mentorship, community engagement, and revitalizing urban spaces through public art.
