The average life expectancy for an American today is around 78 years. That’s quite an improvement from previous generations, but as Rocco A. Carriero notes, living longer presents unique financial and family problems—especially for people who are not millionaires with money set aside to see them through their golden years.

Mr. Carriero, a private wealth advisor based in Southampton, has a new book out that delves into these issues. “Three Cords Approach to Life and Wealth Management for Business Owners,” published by ForbesBooks, offers professional and personal advice for taking care of one’s health, balancing work and life, building a retirement portfolio, and planning an estate. Mr. Carriero hits on every major part of working it out, and on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m., he will be at BookHampton (41 Main Street, East Hampton) to share his ideas and sign copies of his book.

Mr. Carriero’s “Three Cords” philosophy came from lessons learned from his father, an immigrant tailor from Italy. He describes the tailor’s thread as not one string or cord, but three individual cords that wind around each other, giving it unbreakable strength when the tailor sews.

The first cord of Mr. Carriero’s philosophy is about personal growth and development in terms of physical and emotional health. The second cord is the mission and vision of one’s business and work goals. The third cord relates to personal fulfillment through relationships with family and friends and leaving a legacy for the next generation.

In his book, Mr. Carriero writes that when one of the three cords is weakened, the entire string can unravel. He offers strategies for keeping all three cords healthy, from diligently scheduling time for self, work and family, and tax and investment strategies for running a business, to succession and exit planning that people can use whether they are an employee of someone else or running their own business.

Mr. Carriero serves on the executive board of directors for the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. He is also a prominent speaker on the topic of advanced planning and in his spare time enjoys golfing, traveling to visit family in Italy and mentoring young professionals.
