Professional winemaker Roman Roth, of Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, introduced the art of wine blending to NBC’s the “Today” show on Tuesday, May 31.
Mr. Roth explained the technique of blending to “Today” hosts Natalie Morales, Al Roker, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Matt Lauer at the Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe in Manhattan. He also assisted the five hosts in making their own wine blends during the segment, which aired at approximately 8:30 a.m.
“Blending is where everything comes together and you’re creating a new wine that will be your expression, what you like,” Mr. Roth explained as the “Today” show staff measured, mixed, swirled and sipped their own blends. “Close your eyes and smell, it’s all in the smell.”
Later, the newly developed blends were evaluated by wine blogger Gary Vanderchuck of Daily Grape, and “Today” show hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.
“It was amazing to be on the ‘Today’ show,” Mr. Roth said on Wednesday of the experience. “I enjoyed sharing my passion for winemaking and explaining the importance of wine blending.”
