It’s hard to imagine that Sir Elton John endorsed Rufus Wainwright as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” lightly.
The New York-born, Montreal-raised singer-songwriter — who will play the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, located at 76 Main Street, on Saturday, August 18, at 8 p.m. — has established himself as one of the leading male vocalists, composers and writers of his generation, with eight studio albums, three DVDs and three live albums, including the Grammy-nominated “Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall.”
Wainwright has also made a name for himself in the classical world. His first opera, “Prima Dona,” premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009, and his second effort — commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company — is set to premiere in Toronto this fall.
