“Sag Harbor in Focus,” a photography exhibition and contest, returns to The Church for its seventh annual celebration of the village and life on the East End, as experienced by students from Pierson High School.
The exhibition, which opens with a reception on Wednesday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. and runs through Sunday, May 21, will include photographs in eight separate categories, including “Portraiture,” “Landscape,” “Architecture, Still Life, Home and Family,” “A Sense of Place,” “People and Activities” and “Inside Out.” The students’ work was assembled by artist and Pierson High School art teacher Liz Cataletto, and includes work from her and co-teacher Shelby Fullam’s photography and advanced photography classes.
The juror for the competition will be photographer Francine Fleischer, who will choose one winning photograph from each category, for which $100 will be rewarded. A $1,000 grand prize will go to the photographer whose work is chosen as the most outstanding body of work submitted for consideration. The opening will conclude with an awards ceremony for the winners of this year’s exhibition and include a light reception.
The annual “Sag Harbor in Focus” exhibition was created by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik, who are also this year’s sponsors along with the Reutershan Educational Trust. Although the focus is on Sag Harbor, “Art transforms the local into the universal through the lens of the gifted eye,” as Fischl has so aptly stated.
The Church is at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. For more information, visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
