Grenning Gallery will present “Bretzke x Elkins,” a two-person exhibition featuring new work by contemporary realist painters Carl Bretzke and Terry Elkins. An opening reception will be held Saturday, September 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with Elkins in attendance. The exhibition runs through Monday, October 13.
Bretzke and Elkins each focus on familiar landscapes and built environments, bringing distinct approaches to depicting the everyday. Bretzke, who was born and raised in Hutchinson, Minnesota, contributes a series of nocturne paintings set in Sag Harbor, including views of The American Hotel, the bridge to North Haven — as seen from Long Wharf — and Main Street. His work reflects a quiet, observational style influenced by Edward Hopper — sensitive but detached, with an anthropological perspective on place.
Elkins, who was born in Mississippi and is based on the East End, presents prismatic landscapes marked by expansive skies, clean lines and structured compositions. His paintings emphasize the geometry of open spaces and architecture, elevating everyday views through clarity and color.
Together, the artists highlight the quiet beauty in the ordinary — offering two perspectives on how light, mood, and structure shape our experience of place.
