Shakespeare’s ‘Witches’ Reimagined in the Trees at LongHouse Reserve

The Neo-Political Cowgirls dance theater collective presents “The Weird Sisters,” an immersive outdoor dance theater performance inspired by the witches of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” running from August 13 through August 17 at 7:30 p.m. at LongHouse Reserve.

Devised and choreographed by Kate Mueth, founder of the Neo-Political Cowgirls, the one-hour piece features eight dancers and one percussionist performing amid the natural landscape of LongHouse Reserve. Mueth reframes the witches not as evil, but as “deeply intuitive, protectors of nature and truth tellers.” She explains, “Maybe they’re just opening the door of awareness to the possibility for Macbeth’s becoming Thane of Cawdor and king … Maybe they’re just really pissed off — I mean, they should be.”

Mueth calls “The Weird Sisters” “a primal scream of sorts, a wild physical frenzy against the stories of cruel acts throughout time of women being castigated as ‘evil’ and ‘witches’ when they were, in fact, deeply knowing and connected to nature in powerful ways.”

The piece serves as a response to “a brilliant work by Shakespeare pressed against the times in which we are living,” offering a “salve” through music, dance, and nature.

This work is a conceptual prologue to a full outdoor staging of “Macbeth” planned for summer 2026 at LongHouse Reserve. It is appropriate for ages 12 and up and adventurous younger children. The performers are Kate Mueth, Emily Panzer, Celeste McGroarty, Marcia Lipman, Sam Bonilla, Dan Venzke, Kimberly Soss and Hazel Redfield and will be accompanied by percussionist Daniel Zisman. The production team includes lighting designers Sebastian Paczynski and Ben Finn, production manager Carly Cooper, stage manager Grace Wilson, costume designers Kate Mueth and Mary McEnerney, and production assistant Maya Summers.

General admission tickets for “The Weird Sisters” are $35. Student tickets for those under 22 years old are $22. A VIP package for the August 15 performance, limited to two packages of up to four people each, costs $350 and includes special seating, a bottle of “Summer in a Bottle” from Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and assorted snacks.
