As part of its 10th year anniversary season of six concerts, SōLI (Singers of Long Island) will present its debut East End concert at Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. The event is a benefit for the pipe organ restoration at the church.
Founded in 2009 and making its home at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville, many members of SōLI met while singing at Stony Brook University and touring with the university’s premiere choral group, the Camerata Singers. The 28-voice chamber choir, dedicated to promoting the art of choral music, has been highly praised for its sensitive blending of voices and expressive rendering of classic choral repertoire at performances in many churches, schools and libraries across Long Island over the past decade.
The Bridgehampton program, “How Can I Keep from Singing” primarily consists of sacred repertoire and includes choir and audience favorites from the past 10 years by Pitoni, Rheinberger, Lauridsen, Whitacre, Orbán, Hogan, Darmon Meader and more, ranging over time from the Baroque to the present day.
The program also features the premier performance of a new work, “Pangat melos” by East End composer and retired East Hampton High School music educator, David M. Douglas. His piece “Evening Without Angels” was recently heard in Sag Harbor, sung by the acclaimed treble choir, Accord.
SōLI looks forward to presenting yet another of his works as the choir seeks to promote new repertoire in addition to beloved standards. The suggested donation for the concert is $20 ($5 for students). The Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church is located at 2429 Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton.
