Solé East Resort will present a free concert on Saturday, August 12, featuring St. Lucia. The afternoon will kick off with a pool party at 1 p.m. and concert will begin at 5 p.m.
The project of Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek, Brooklyn’s St. Lucia performs 1980s-influenced, synth-driven pop.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a 10-year-old, Grobler began singing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, a mixed-race choir that performed for Nelson Mandela and around the world. He started making his own music at age 12, taking inspiration from Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, and Sting.
Grobler moved to England at age 19 to study music at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts. There, he met Patti Beranek, who became his collaborator and eventually his wife. The pair moved to New York City, where he became a jingle writer, and he and Beranek formed St. Lucia as an outlet for their own music.
In the 2013 recording “When the Night,” the duo channeled the inspirations of Grobler’s youth with more contemporary influences that included tropical pop. St. Lucia’s music grew more uplifting and anthemic with releases such as 2018’s “Hyperion,” which incorporated elements as far-flung as gospel choirs and 1990s pop. The duo added further musical dimensions with 2019’s “Acoustic, Vol.1” and remixed like-minded acts at the dawn of the 2020s.
Space for the concert is limited and attendees must be 21 and over and reserve their spot in advance. For general admission tickets and dinner reservations, visit soleeast.com. Backyard Restaurant at Sole East is at 90 Second House Road, Montauk. Call 631-668-2105 for more details.
