The Arts Center at Duck Creek will present the Sophia Kickhofel Quartet on Saturday, September 6, at 5 p.m. as part of its New Music Series, curated by Peter Watrous.
The quartet features Sophia Kickhofel on alto saxophone, Jayla Chee on bass, Nate Jones on trombone and Matt Lee on drums.
A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Kickhofel began studying classical saxophone at age 10 and discovered jazz at 13. By high school, she was dedicated exclusively to jazz, performing with national honor ensembles including NYO Jazz and the NAfME Jazz Band. Her accolades include recognition as a YoungArts Finalist and recipient of the Irv Williams Fellowship.
Kickhofel has led her own ensembles across the Midwest and shared the stage with artists such as Sean Jones, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ulysses Owens Jr. and Victor Goines. She has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, Lincoln Center Shanghai and Dizzy’s Club.
Currently a student at the Juilliard School, she studies with pianist Marc Cary and saxophonist Dan Block. Her music aims to foster empathy and build community among listeners.
Audience members are encouraged to bring beach chairs and picnics. All events are free and open to the public. Space and parking are limited; early arrival is recommended.
The performance will take place Saturday, September 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Arts Center at Duck Creek, 127 Squaw Road, East Hampton. The rain date is Sunday, September 7. For more information, visit duckcreekarts.org.
