Southampton Cultural Center to hold open auditions for Godspell

author on Aug 5, 2009

Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will hold open auditions for upcoming performances of Stephen Schwartz’s “Godspell” on Sunday, August 9, at 3 p.m. and Monday, August 10, at 6 p.m. at the Levitas Center for the Performing Arts.

The show will run this fall, from October 15 through November 1. Michael Disher will be the director and choreographer, while Robert Peterson will be the musical director.

“Godspell” opened Off-Broadway on May 17, 1971, and ultimately landed on Broadway, where audiences turned out for more than 2,600 performances. Touring companies have since staged the musical in venues around the world and the show has enjoyed numerous revivals. Several cast albums have been released throughout the years, and “Day By Day,” from the original cast recording, reached number 13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.

The musical follows a series of parables, based on the Gospel of Matthew, that are interspersed with a variety of modern music and period pastiche numbers.

Roles in “Godspell” include Jesus, tenor; John the Baptist/Judas, baritone; Sonia, mezzo soprano/alto; and Robin, mezzo-soprano; among others. All cast members should be able to move and dance well, and gymnastics and good flexibility are a plus.

Rehearsals will begin in August immediately following the auditions, and weekend availability may be required. Not all performers will be required to be at all rehearsals, but ensemble rehearsals will be mandatory.

Auditioners are asked bring 32 measures, with sheet music, of a show tune or rock standard. Dance shoes are highly recommended, and performers should be prepared to read from the script.

For more information, call 287-4377 or e-mail Michael Disher at dishermichael@hotmail.com.
